First issue

Finding an issue labelled "good first issue" is easy; GitHub search does it.

Read the full description

Knowing which ones are not traps is the hard part, and that is what this scores. Every candidate is filtered at the search index for unassigned, no linked pull request, live repository, and a short comment thread, then ranked against your own weighted skill profile with the matching evidence quoted on each row. The repositories behind your top matches are checked for real activity, so an issue in an abandoned or archived project is flagged rather than recommended, and the top picks are spread across projects so one prolific repo cannot fill your whole list. Red flags are shown, never scored away: a busy thread that may already be claimed, a stale issue freshly bumped, a reporter who is not a maintainer, an issue too thin to start without asking. Honest limit: it does not read comment threads, because that costs one API call per issue and would break the keyless budget, so an issue with a couple of comments may still be quietly taken;

Inputs6, all optional

rote asks for these before running and shows the defaults it will use.

  • Profile pathprofile_path

Path to a weighted skill profile (resources/profile-prompt.md builds one) or a plain-text CV, which is read as keywords instead. Absent means the bundled demo profile. Agent: offer to build the profile from their CV, repos or manifests

    optionalstringdefault ./profile.jsonexample ~/profile.jsoncustom value allowed
  • Csv pathcsv_path

Your living shortlist, merged across runs; the status column is yours and is never overwritten. Agent: ask where they want it on the first real run

    optionalstringdefault ~/first-issue.csvexample ~/oss/first-issue.csvcustom value allowed
  • Languageslanguages

Comma-separated languages, applied as a GitHub language filter at the search index. This is the single biggest relevance win: set it to your two or three strongest. Empty searches every language

    optionalstringexample python,typescriptcustom value allowed
  • Labelslabels

Which issue label to hunt; other useful values are help wanted, up-for-grabs, documentation

optionalstringdefault good first issueexample help wantedcustom value allowed
  • Min scoremin_score

Only add NEW rows scoring at least this (0-100); rows already in your sheet are always kept and refreshed

    optionalintegerdefault 1example 30custom value allowed
  • Days backdays_back

Ignore issues with no activity in this many days, since a silent issue usually means a silent project

Credential values and current readiness remain local. Opening this page never prompts for a credential, opens an authorization browser, or calls a service this play uses.

A play is a published, versioned automation package that runs on your own machine through rote, a free command-line tool. Opening this page installs nothing and runs nothing.
