Downloads filed

Your Downloads folder is where files go to be forgotten.

Read the full description

This files the recent ones into a dated folder and leaves a manifest that puts every one of them back. Dry run by default - the first time you run it, it touches nothing and shows you the exact plan, so you can decide with the moves in front of you rather than after. It never overwrites - a name that already exists in the destination gets a numbered suffix, and the manifest records the rename. It never moves bundles or installers, because moving a .app or a .dmg breaks things in ways nobody connects back to a sweep they ran three days ago. Directories and dotfiles are left alone. After moving, it checks that every file is actually at its destination and actually gone from the source, and reports any that are not rather than claiming success. Two sweeps on the same day extend one manifest instead of replacing it, so the first sweep's files stay recoverable. Undo ships with the play as a script that refuses to overwrite anything sitting at the original pa

Everything here is checked on your machine when rote inspects the play. This page never learns what you have installed or which credentials you hold.

Must be on your PATH when used. minimum version undeclared.

Inputs5, all optional

rote asks for these before running and shows the defaults it will use.

  • Sourcesource

The folder to sweep. Read only for its own listing; nothing outside it is touched.

    optionalstringdefault ~/Downloadsexample ~/Desktopcustom value allowed
  • Hourshours

Only files modified within this many hours are candidates. Widen it for a weekly sweep, narrow it to catch just this afternoon. This is the value that changes between runs.

    optionalstringdefault 24example 168custom value allowed
  • Archive rootarchive_root

Where the dated folder is created. The sweep writes only inside archive_root, and only into that day's folder.

    optionalstringdefault ~/Documents/filedexample ~/Archivecustom value allowed
  • Dry rundry_run

Leave this true to see the plan and move nothing. Set it to false to actually move the files. It defaults to true so that running this play for the first time cannot cost you anything.

Credential values and current readiness remain local. Opening this page never prompts for a credential, opens an authorization browser, or calls a service this play uses.

A play is a published, versioned automation package that runs on your own machine through rote, a free command-line tool. Opening this page installs nothing and runs nothing.
